想 vs 要: what is the difference?

想 is 'would like' and is softer; 要 is 'want' or 'need' and is firmer. 我想喝水 is polite, 我要喝水 is direct.

Says you would like to do something, or feel like it; it is the gentler of the two.

Not: 我想了喝水。 想 goes straight before the verb, with no 了 between them: 我想喝水。

要 (yào)

Says you want something firmly, need to do it, or are going to do it.

Not: 我要去不北京。 不 goes before the modal verb, and the usual negative of both 想 and 要 is 不想: 我不想去北京。
