没有/不如: negative comparisons

Chinese grammar · HSK 4 · 没有/不如比较 · By Carson 木林森

Two structures to say X is less than Y:

没有 méi yǒu haven't 不如比较 bù rú bǐ jiào

1. A + 没有 + B + (那么/这么) + Adjective
> 这里的冬天没有北方冷。(Winters here aren't as cold as the north.)

2. A + 不如 + B + (+ Adjective)
> 她的成绩不如他好。(Her grades aren't as good as his.)

Key differences:
- 没有 = 'not as … as' — straightforward comparison
- 不如 = 'not as good as / inferior to' — implies B is the better option

Common mistake: Don't add 更 or 比 inside these structures.
❌ 她没有比他高。 ✅ 她没有他高。
