HSK 3.0 against HSK 2.0
The two exams share a name, a number range and very little else at the level of detail that matters to someone studying for one. Here is every difference that changes what you do this month, with the vocabulary tables that most comparisons get wrong because they quote the 2021 framework rather than the exam syllabus published in November 2025.

All three columns are cumulative. The middle column is the 2021 grading standard, which is a framework document; the right column is the exam syllabus, which is what the papers are built from. The syllabus pulled levels 1 to 5 back down after feedback that the beginner tiers were too steep, and that is the single biggest reason two credible articles quote different numbers at you.
Read the right-hand column as the practical answer, and treat any level-for-level comparison as approximate: new level 4 is closer in size to old level 5 than to old level 4.

Fewer questions is not an easier exam. The items get longer and carry more, and the skill count goes up rather than down — a level 4 candidate now sits a spoken component that the old level 4 never asked for.
What each certificate is worth
- Old certificates stay valid. Nothing about the transition expires them, and institutions continue to accept them.
- The two-year convention is separate. Universities and employers commonly want a result from within two years; that has always been their rule rather than the exam's, and it has not changed.
- Watch requirements that name a bare number. A program asking for "HSK 4" written before the transition means the old level 4. If you are close to a deadline, ask which standard they mean rather than assuming the harder reading of it.
What to study differently
- Speaking, if you are at level 3 or above. It is the change that catches people, because it is a skill rather than a longer list. Start now: the conversation kit and the speaking exam.
- Characters as two separate jobs. The syllabus splits reading from writing, so drill recognition broadly and production narrowly rather than treating every character as both. How to learn characters.
- More vocabulary at the bottom. If you are a beginner aiming at level 1 or 2, plan for roughly double the words the old exam asked for, which is a few extra weeks rather than a different project.
- Nothing else. The grammar is the same grammar and the listening is the same listening. Do not restart a plan that is working.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between HSK 2.0 and HSK 3.0?
HSK 2.0 is six levels, 5,000 words at the top, four skills with speaking sold separately as the optional HSKK. HSK 3.0 is nine levels in three stages, about 11,000 words at the top, a mandatory speaking component from level 3, separate lists for characters you read and characters you write, and a translation section in the advanced exam.
Is HSK 3.0 harder than HSK 2.0?
At the bottom, clearly: level 1 roughly doubles from 150 to about 300 words and level 2 from 300 to about 500. At the top the totals are close, about 5,400 against 5,000 by level 6. The bigger difference is that speaking is compulsory from level 3, so a learner who only studied to read and listen now has a component they cannot skip.
Does HSK 3.0 have fewer questions?
Yes at levels 3 to 6. The old paper ran 80 questions at HSK 3, 100 at HSK 4 and 5, and 101 at HSK 6; the new papers are roughly 70, 70, 72 and 82, and run shorter. Levels 1 and 2 keep about 40 and 60 questions, but level 2 gains a writing section.
Is an HSK 2.0 certificate still worth anything?
Yes. No expiry is being applied to old certificates because of the transition, and universities and employers continue to accept them. The usual convention of treating a result as current for about two years from the test date is separate and unchanged.
Does HSK 3.0 level 4 equal HSK 2.0 level 4?
No. New level 4 asks for roughly 2,000 cumulative words against 1,200 under the old exam, so the new certificate at the same number represents more vocabulary. Read a program's requirement carefully when it names a level without naming a standard.
