The old HSK levels (初等, 中等, 高等) and what they mean now

初等 grade A is level 5. 中等 grade A is level 8. The HSK taken before about 2010 ran eleven levels across three separate exams, and your certificate names a band (基础, 初等, 中等 or 高等) and a grade (C, B or A) rather than a single number. Grade C is the bottom of a band and grade A the top.

The eleven levels

ExamBandGrade CGrade BGrade A
HSK(基础)Basic 基础Level 1Level 2Level 3
HSK(初中等)Elementary 初等Level 3Level 4Level 5
Intermediate 中等Level 6Level 7Level 8
HSK(高等)Advanced 高等Level 9Level 10Level 11

Level 3 appears twice because the two lower papers overlapped: you could reach it from the top of HSK(基础) or the bottom of HSK(初中等). Which paper you sat is printed on the certificate, so the pair is never ambiguous in practice.

Read your certificate in this order: the exam name tells you which of the three papers you sat, the band tells you which half of that paper you landed in, and the letter tells you where inside the band. 初等 + A means the elementary band of HSK(初中等), at its top, which is level 5.

What the vocabulary requirement was

One syllabus sat behind the whole exam rather than one list per level. The 1992 汉语水平词汇与汉字等级大纲 graded 8,822 words and 2,905 characters into four tiers:

TierWordsDrawn on by
甲 jiǎ1,033The basic paper, and everything above it.
乙 yǐ2,018The elementary and intermediate bands.
丙 bǐng2,202The intermediate band and above.
丁 dīng3,569The advanced paper.

Those four tiers total 8,822 words. Today's HSK 6 asks for 5,000, which is one reason a holder of an old 高等 certificate should not read "HSK 6" as a step up.

Find out what you still hold, twenty years on. The free adaptive placement test needs no account and marks which topics survived — which is a more useful answer about an old certificate than any conversion table.

How it lines up against HSK 1–6

There is no official conversion, and there never was one. Hanban replaced the exam rather than mapping it, so anyone showing you a clean equivalence table built it themselves. The rough correspondence in general use:

Old bandRoughly todayWhy it is only rough
基础 (levels 1–3)About HSK 2The old basic paper tested a narrower syllabus but graded it harder.
初等 (levels 3–5)About HSK 3Old 初等 assumed characters that new HSK 3 still glosses in pinyin.
中等 (levels 6–8)About HSK 4–5The widest gap of the four; 中等 A sat well above new HSK 4.
高等 (levels 9–11)About HSK 6高等 included compulsory writing and speaking that HSK 6 does not.

If an institution has to accept your certificate, ask that institution directly. The answer is theirs to give, it varies by country and by university, and no table on any website overrides it.

What to do with an old certificate now

  1. Keep it. It is a real record of an exam you passed, and it does not expire in the way a new HSK score report does for admissions purposes.
  2. Do not assume the level held. Twenty years is long enough for the vocabulary to go and the grammar to stay, or the reverse. Which of the two happened is the only thing that decides where you restart.
  3. Test, then choose. Sit a current HSK level you can already pass, or take a placement test first if you would rather not pay to find out. Which HSK to register for covers the choice, and the new HSK, explained covers the nine-level standard now replacing HSK 1–6 in turn.

Frequently asked questions

What level is 初等 grade A on the old HSK?

Level 5. The old HSK 初中等 exam awarded levels 3 to 8, split into an elementary band (初等: level 3 = grade C, level 4 = grade B, level 5 = grade A) and an intermediate band (中等: level 6 = C, level 7 = B, level 8 = A). Grade A is the top of its band, so 初等 A is level 5 and 中等 A is level 8.

How many levels did the old HSK have?

Eleven, across three separate exams. HSK(基础) awarded levels 1 to 3, HSK(初中等) awarded levels 3 to 8, and HSK(高等) awarded levels 9 to 11. Level 3 appears twice because the basic and elementary-intermediate papers overlapped at the bottom.

Does an old HSK certificate still count?

It is still a genuine record of the exam you sat, and the exam has not existed since about 2010. Universities and employers ask for the current HSK, so an old certificate usually needs explaining rather than converting. If a specific institution matters to you, ask that institution — the answer varies and no central rule replaces it.

What is the old HSK equivalent to HSK 4 or HSK 5?

There is no official conversion, and Hanban never published one. The rough correspondence people use is old 初等 to about new HSK 3, old 中等 to about new HSK 4 or 5, and old 高等 to about new HSK 6. Treat every one of those as an approximation: the two exams were built on different syllabuses and test different things.

Why did the HSK change?

The new HSK arrived in 2009–2010 with a simpler shape — six numbered levels, one exam per level, and a vocabulary list published per level rather than one 8,822-word syllabus behind all of them. It was also pitched lower: the new HSK 6 vocabulary requirement of 5,000 words sits below the old syllabus's full 8,822.

What was the vocabulary requirement of the old HSK?

One syllabus covered the whole exam: the 1992 汉语水平词汇与汉字等级大纲 listed 8,822 words in four tiers — 甲 1,033, 乙 2,018, 丙 2,202 and 丁 3,569 — plus 2,905 characters graded the same way. The band you sat determined how far up those tiers the paper drew from.
