简化字的那场争论
The Argument About Simplification
生词 · New in this passage
林华,你给我看的这张照片,上面的字是繁体字吧?我认识一半,剩下的猜不出来是什么意思。
Lin Hua, the writing in this photo you showed me, that's traditional characters, right? I recognize about half, and I can't guess the rest.
对,这是我在台湾长大的时候,家里的老照片。我们从小学的就是繁体字,简体字反而是我长大以后才慢慢认识的。你是不是从小学的就是简体字?
Right, this is an old family photo from when I was growing up in Taiwan. We learned traditional characters from childhood, and simplified characters are actually something I only got to know gradually as an adult. Did you learn simplified characters from childhood?
是啊,我是在中国大陆长大的,二十世纪五十年代到六十年代,那边开始推行简化字,从那以后,简体字就是我们平时写汉字用的标准写法。
Yeah, I grew up in mainland China. In the 1950s and 60s of the twentieth century, they started promoting simplified characters there, and since then simplified characters have been the standard way we normally write Chinese characters.
我知道那段历史,但是我一直不太明白,为什么那时候要把汉字变简单?只是为了写字快一点吗?
I know that bit of history, but I've never quite understood why they needed to make characters simpler back then. Was it just to write a little faster?
也不只是写字快。那时候,很多人还没有机会读书、识字,笔画少的字,学起来更容易,对帮助大家识字很有用。你想,如果一个字笔画很多,一个刚开始识字的人,学起来当然更难。
It's not just about writing faster. Back then, a lot of people hadn't had the chance to go to school or learn to read yet. Characters with fewer strokes are easier to learn, and that was very useful for helping people become literate. Think about it, if a character has a lot of strokes, someone who's just starting to learn characters will obviously find it harder.
这我同意,笔画少确实方便识字,对当时的中国大陆来说,这应该是一件很重要的事情。但是,繁体字也不是没有道理。你看,繁体字很多部分还保留着一个汉字本来的样子,从字源就能猜出这个字大概是什么意思。
I agree with that, fewer strokes really does make characters easier to learn, and for mainland China at that time, that must have been a really important thing. But traditional characters aren't without their reasons either. Look, in traditional characters, a lot of the components still keep a character's original form, and from the etymology alone you can often guess roughly what a character means.
你能不能给我举个例子?我对字源不太了解。
Can you give me an example? I don't know much about etymology.
好,比如"爱"这个字。繁体字的写法中间有一个"心",因为古人觉得,爱这件事跟心有关系。简化字把中间那部分变成了别的样子,那个心就看不见了。有人说,这样一来,"爱"字里就没有心了。
Sure, take the character for "love" as an example. In the traditional way of writing it, there's a "heart" in the middle, because ancient people felt that love had something to do with the heart. The simplified character changed that middle part into something else, so the heart isn't visible anymore. Some people say that, this way, the character for love no longer has a heart in it.
这个例子有意思,但是我觉得也不能只看这一个字。其实很多简体字不是新发明的,老百姓早就有更简单的写法,只是以前不是正式的标准,简化字只是把这些写法定成了标准。
That's an interesting example, but I don't think we should judge based on just this one character. Actually, a lot of simplified characters aren't new inventions. Ordinary people already had simpler ways of writing them long ago, it just wasn't the official standard before. Simplification just made those existing forms official.
原来是这样,我以前真不知道。那你是不是觉得,繁体字保留字源这件事,就没有那么重要了?
Oh, I really didn't know that before. So do you feel like traditional characters preserving the etymology matters less then?
也不是。我觉得两边说的都对,只是重视的东西不一样。你们重视一个字跟历史、字源的关系,我们那时候更重视,怎么让更多人能识字、能读书。
Not really. I think both sides have a point, it's just that we value different things. You all value a character's connection to history and etymology, while for us back then, it was more about how to help more people become literate and able to read.
说得对。而且,台湾和香港到现在还在用繁体字,我们看古代的文章,比较不用查字典就能看懂,这对我们来说也很方便。
Well said. And also, Taiwan and Hong Kong still use traditional characters today, so when we read old texts, we can understand them without checking a dictionary as much, which is also convenient for us.
这样听起来,简体字和繁体字,其实是汉字的两条路,一条帮助更多人识字,一条帮助大家跟历史保持关系。这两件事,好像都很重要。
Hearing it that way, it sounds like simplified and traditional characters are really two different paths for Chinese characters, one that helps more people become literate, and one that helps people stay connected with history. Both of those things seem really important.
对,我也说不好哪一个更重要。不过,你现在能认识我这张老照片上一半的繁体字,已经很不错了!
Right, I can't really say which one is more important either. But you can already recognize half the traditional characters in my old photo now, that's already pretty good!
哈哈,那你也教我认识剩下的那一半吧。
Ha, then teach me the other half too.
