The Doorman Who Knows Everyone
New in this passage
The new resident had only moved into the building two-odd months earlier. Every time she passed the front gate, the doorman, old Mr. Zhang, would look up and mention exactly when she'd gone out that day, or what time she'd gotten back the night before.
Mr. Zhang, to be honest, I'm not quite used to this. You're the doorman here, not my family, so how is it you remember exactly when I leave and come back?
He's not deliberately keeping tabs on you, it's a habit he built up over decades as the doorman. Who in this building goes to work at what hour, whose kid gets out of school when, he keeps all of it straight in his head, his memory is remarkable.
But how is that different from surveillance? If I come home a little late from work, I have to hear a few remarks from him about it too. It feels like I'm being watched, like I have no privacy at all.
I understand how you feel, everyone your age thinks that at first when they move in. But don't rush to a conclusion just yet, wait until something actually goes wrong and you'll see how valuable that memory of his really is.
Last week an important delivery of mine went missing exactly that way. The courier said it had already been delivered, but I searched the whole building and couldn't find it anywhere, I was frantic.
And then it was Mr. Zhang who found it for you, wasn't it? I heard he remembered right away, the courier had left it on the wrong floor, at the door of the family on the third floor.
That's right. If he hadn't remembered when I usually order things online and when a delivery was due, and gone up to knock on that door and ask himself, I might really never have gotten my package back.
See, that's exactly what I wanted to say. What he remembers isn't when you leave the house, it's how everyone in this building's life is supposed to run, so when something goes sideways he's the first one who can piece it together, and that runs on memory, not surveillance. This building has depended on him for years now, whoever forgets their keys, whoever's delivery goes to the wrong place, he can always help.
I'll grant you that, that day I really did owe him. But I still feel a bit uncomfortable, as if whatever I do in this building, nothing escapes his notice.
So let me ask you this: if tomorrow he were replaced with a keycard, if this building stopped depending on him, one that just logged the time whoever came and went, without remembering the person, would you feel more at ease?
At the very least, no one would be remarking on what time I got home, that part I'd definitely feel more at ease about.
Then have you thought about this: next time a delivery gets sent to the wrong place, or you forget your keys at midnight and can't get in, will a keycard go knock on that door on the third floor for you?
I honestly hadn't thought about that part. But something in me still can't quite get past it, I don't like being remembered in that much detail, even if he means no harm by it.
I'm not asking you to like it. I just think that something nobody ever asked him to do, and that he keeps doing anyway, deserves a little more patience from us, not a rush to replace it.
All right, I won't deny it, this building really does depend on that memory of his. It's just that being watched over like this so wholeheartedly, that's something I still need a bit more time to accept.
