Something strange happened at the office today. I can't make sense of it. Can you help me understand?

Go ahead, tell me. What happened?

I just moved to this city last month, I didn't know anyone. One day my son got sick and needed to see a doctor right away, but that hospital is hard to get an appointment at. My colleague Wang Lei heard about it and used his own connections to get me an appointment with a specialist. Of course I was grateful, but ever since then he seems to think I owe him a huge favor, he wants my help with everything, even things that have nothing to do with work. Last week he even said, since our company is about to sign a contract, he wanted me to add his friend's company into the deal. I said that wasn't appropriate, because that wasn't our best option. He got upset, said I'd forgotten so quickly what he did for us with the appointment. What does that have to do with the contract? A contract is written on paper, it only counts once everyone signs it, but he seems to think that appointment matters more than the contract.

I get why he's upset. You still don't quite understand what Chinese people mean by guanxi. Guanxi isn't a one-time transaction, and it isn't something written on paper. It's a long-running account of owing each other, built on trust, between two people over a long time.

An account of owing each other? But I never borrowed money from him. Why would I owe him anything?

Because a favor is also a kind of owing. He got you that appointment, so now you owe him a favor. It's just that this favor has no set price, and it isn't written down anywhere, it only exists in the two people's minds. When you pay it back and how much, none of that is clear, but both sides remember.

Then why does this unclear account matter more than a clearly written contract? Our company spent three months getting that contract signed!

Because a contract only needs both companies to follow the law, and even if you never meet again afterward, the contract still works. But a favor is different. A favor depends on trust. If you don't pay it back, it's not the law that comes after you, it's that everyone who knows both of you will know you're someone who doesn't return favors, and no one will want to help you again. That's more frightening to people than breaking a contract.

I get it, a favor reaches further than a contract does. But listening to this, guanxi could also be a kind of trouble, right? If I don't want to owe anyone a favor, does that mean I can't accept anyone's help at all?

You've hit the key point. Yes, sometimes guanxi traps people too. Some people will deliberately do you a small favor so you'll owe them one, so later they can ask you for a big favor in return. And some people are afraid to accept help at all, because they're afraid they can't pay it back, or afraid of losing someone's trust, and end up owing a favor they never wanted in the first place. So guanxi is genuinely useful, but it can also turn into a net that traps even people who never wanted to owe anything.

So what should I do now? Should I actually add his friend's company into the contract or not?

I don't know the answer to that one, you'll have to decide for yourself. But you could try telling him clearly, face to face, that you're grateful for the appointment, but the contract is a separate matter, and the two shouldn't be mixed together.
