GraphChinese for ChatGPT: a Chinese dictionary and grammar plugin

By Carson 木林森 · October 2026

GraphChinese is a free ChatGPT plugin for learning Mandarin. It gives ChatGPT a real Chinese dictionary, a sentence splitter that marks each word with pinyin and HSK level, and 195 grammar points with the points to learn before each one. Add GraphChinese to ChatGPT, then type @GraphChinese in any chat.

What you can ask it

The ten tools

ToolWhat it does
search_dictionaryFind words by characters, pinyin or English.
lookup_wordOne word: reading, senses, HSK level, its characters.
get_related_charactersA character's components, the characters built on it, look-alikes and its sound family.
segment_textSplit Chinese text into words, each with pinyin, meaning and HSK level.
search_grammarSearch the 195 grammar points by keyword or level.
get_grammar_pointOne point: explanation, examples, what it needs first and what it unlocks.
get_study_orderThe opening vocabulary of an HSK level in teaching order.
get_common_charactersThe most frequent characters and the share of text they cover.
get_topic_wordsCore words for a topic such as food or travel.
get_grammar_orderA level's grammar in teaching order.

Every answer links to the matching page on this site, so you can check it: words go to the Chinese dictionary, grammar to the grammar reference.

How to add it

  1. Open GraphChinese in the ChatGPT plugin directory and add it.
  2. Start a new chat and type @GraphChinese, or just ask a Chinese question and let ChatGPT pick the tool.
  3. In Claude or another assistant, add a remote MCP server with the URL https://graphchinese.com/mcp and no authentication.

Why it beats asking ChatGPT cold

A language model knows a lot of Chinese, and it is unreliable on exactly the two things a learner needs to trust: which HSK level a word belongs to, and which grammar comes before which. It will tell you confidently and differently each time.

The plugin answers both from data. Levels come from the compiled HSK lists, and the before and after of each grammar point comes from the prerequisite graph that orders the whole curriculum.

What it does not do

It does not know what you have studied. For a tutor pitched at your real vocabulary, give the model your word list: how to use an AI tutor for Chinese. For drills to paste in, see the Chinese tutor prompts.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a ChatGPT plugin for learning Chinese?

Yes. GraphChinese is a free ChatGPT plugin that gives ChatGPT a Chinese dictionary, a sentence splitter with pinyin and HSK levels, 195 grammar points from HSK 1 to 6, and the order to learn words and grammar in. Add it from the ChatGPT plugin directory, then type @GraphChinese in a chat.

Why use a plugin instead of asking ChatGPT directly?

ChatGPT guesses at HSK levels and at which grammar comes before which. The plugin answers from a compiled dictionary and a prerequisite graph, so the level it gives a word and the points it says to learn first come from data, not from a guess.

Is the GraphChinese ChatGPT plugin free?

Yes. Every tool is free and needs no account. It reads the same public dictionary and grammar reference as graphchinese.com/dict and graphchinese.com/grammar.

Does the plugin see my ChatGPT conversations or my account?

No. Each tool receives only the word, sentence or grammar query it was called with. No tool takes an identity or returns account data. The privacy policy covers what is logged.

Does it work in Claude or other AI assistants?

Yes. The plugin is a Model Context Protocol server at https://graphchinese.com/mcp with no authentication, so any assistant that accepts a remote MCP server can use the same tools.

The plugin answers questions. GraphChinese teaches the whole path. Every word and grammar point in prerequisite order, reviewed until it sticks. The whole course, HSK 0 through HSK 6, is $49 once for lifetime access.
