Serial Verb Sentences: Sequential Actions

Chinese grammar · HSK 2 · 连动句 · By Carson 木林森

When one subject does two actions in a row (often: method/means then goal, or action then purpose), just line the verbs up — NO conjunction needed between them.

Pattern: Subject + V1 (+O1) + V2 (+O2)

我坐公共汽车去学校。(I take the bus to school — V1=means, V2=goal, both share subject 我.)
他去商店买东西。(He goes to the store to buy things — V1=goal-directed movement, V2=purpose.)

Word order is fixed: the action that happens FIRST comes first. Don't add 和/但是 between the verbs — that would incorrectly imply two separate, unrelated actions.

我坐公共汽车去学校。 Wǒ zuò gōnggòng qìchē qù xuéxiào. I take the bus to school. Minimal frame: means (V1) + goal (V2), same subject, no conjunction.
他去商店买水果。 Tā qù shāngdiàn mǎi shuǐguǒ. He goes to the store to buy fruit. Movement verb (去) + purpose verb (买), different verb pair.
我下课以后去踢足球。 Wǒ xiàkè yǐhòu qù tī zúqiú. After class, I go play soccer. Adds a time clause (下课以后) before the serial-verb chain.
