How to pass HSK 2

A short wooden plank bridge laid across a stream on two stone piers.

HSK 2 is 300 cumulative words across 60 questions, with pinyin still printed above every character and listening items still played twice. It is the last comfortable level. What you build here — character reading, the aspect particle 了, and the habit of hearing a sentence at speed — is what decides whether HSK 3 feels like a step or a wall.

What the exam asks

SectionQuestionsWhat you do
Listening35Picture matching, true or false against a statement, and short dialogues with one question each. Every item plays twice.
Reading25Sentence-to-picture matching, gap-fill from a word bank, and matching the two halves of a short exchange. Pinyin above every character.

Total: 60 questions, about 55 minutes, 200 points, 120 to pass. No writing section. See the HSK exam format for all six levels.

Which format are you sitting? Under the revised standard taking effect from July 2026, level 2 asks for roughly 500 words rather than 300, and the paper gains a writing section it never had. Centers moved at different speeds, so check what your own booking names: the new HSK, explained.

The grammar that carries the level

HSK 2 is where Chinese starts having structure rather than phrases. Five patterns account for most of the reading section and most of what you can newly say:

In GraphChinese: HSK 2 is 88 topics carrying 297 cumulative words, with 1 narrated readings and 1 decks built from the same material. Each grammar pattern is its own topic with its own prerequisites, so 了 arrives after the verbs it operates on rather than in the week the textbook happened to reach it.

A ten-week plan from HSK 1

WeeksWhat you do
1–2Repair HSK 1. Any word you cannot hear at speed is a hole HSK 2 will widen. Start reading HSK 1 characters without the pinyin crutch.
3–6The 150 new words in sentences, roughly 40 a week, with daily spaced review and one grammar pattern a week from the list above.
7–8Short readings at level. This is the first level where a graded passage exists that you can actually read, and reading is what turns recognition into speed.
9–10Two full past papers under time, then targeted repair of what they exposed.

The three things that decide it

Frequently asked questions

How many words do you need for HSK 2?

300 cumulative — the 150 from HSK 1 plus about 150 new ones. The exam draws only from that list, and the HSK 1 half is assumed rather than retested gently.

How long does HSK 2 take after HSK 1?

About eight to twelve weeks at 30 to 45 minutes a day. The word count doubles but the grammar does more of the work: 了, the comparison patterns, and the question forms are what separate the two levels.

Is pinyin printed on the HSK 2 paper?

Yes. HSK 1 and HSK 2 both print pinyin above every character, and HSK 3 prints none. Use HSK 2 to build character reading you will not have time to build later.

Should you skip HSK 2 and go straight to HSK 3?

If your goal is a certificate for an application, skip it — nobody asks for HSK 2. If your goal is a checkpoint, sitting it is cheap and the gap between HSK 2 and HSK 3 is the largest in the series, so arriving at HSK 3 with HSK 2 genuinely solid is worth more than the certificate.

What score passes HSK 2?

120 out of 200: listening and reading are 100 points each, and 60% of the total passes.

Arrive at HSK 3 with HSK 2 automatic. GraphChinese does not unlock a topic until its prerequisites are proven, and spaced review keeps HSK 1 from decaying while you climb. The whole course, HSK 0 through HSK 6, is $49 once for lifetime access.
