How to pass HSK 1
HSK 1 is 150 words, 40 questions, and a 60% pass. Every character on the paper carries pinyin above it and every listening item plays twice, which makes this the gentlest exam in the series and the one most easily passed in a way that leaves you stuck at HSK 3. Passing it well means building the foundation the paper does not test.

Which format are you sitting? Under the revised standard taking effect from July 2026, level 1 asks for roughly 300 words rather than 150 — about double — while the paper keeps its shape at around 40 questions. Centers moved at different speeds, so the format you sit is the one named on your own booking: the new HSK, explained.
The 150 words
The HSK 1 list is closed and short: numbers, family, time, a dozen verbs, the question words, and the sentence particles that hold them together. The whole list, with pinyin and English, is free on the HSK 1 vocabulary page, and there is a printable version on the printables page.
Learn them as sentences rather than as pairs. 好 alone is a word you can recognize; 你好 / 很好 / 不好意思 are three things you can say, and the exam's listening section is built from sentences, not from words in isolation.
An eight-week plan from zero

Thirty to forty-five minutes a day carries this plan. More than an hour a day at this level mostly buys fatigue, because the limit is how much your memory consolidates overnight rather than how many words you can look at.
The three things that decide it
- Tones learned first, not later. At HSK 1 the vocabulary is small enough that you can pass with sloppy tones. Two levels later you cannot, and by then the wrong tones are habits. Fix them while there are 150 words to fix, not 1,200. The four tones, explained.
- Listening every day, from the start. The reading section is generous and the listening section is where the points go missing. Ten minutes a day of hearing the list in sentences beats an hour of reading it.
- Characters anyway. The paper prints pinyin, so nothing forces you to read 我 or 是. Read them anyway. HSK 3 removes the pinyin, and the learners who stall there are the ones who took the exam's offer at HSK 1 and 2.

The last two weeks
Do two things only. Sit complete past papers under exam conditions, including the listening timing, because the pace is the part practice at your own speed never rehearses. Then take every item you got wrong and find the word or pattern underneath it, rather than rereading the whole list — a wrong answer is a specific gap, and specific gaps close in minutes.

How many words do you need for HSK 1?
150 words. Every word on the exam comes from that published list, so HSK 1 is the one level where knowing the list cover to cover is a complete preparation for the vocabulary.
How long does it take to pass HSK 1 from zero?
About six to ten weeks at 30 to 45 minutes a day, and faster if you already know the tones and pinyin. The list is 150 words; the time goes on hearing them reliably and on not skipping the foundations underneath.
Do you need to read characters for HSK 1?
Not to pass. Every character on the HSK 1 paper carries pinyin above it. You should learn to read them anyway, because HSK 3 removes the pinyin entirely and a learner who leaned on it arrives with no character reading at all.
What score do you need to pass HSK 1?
120 out of 200 — 100 points for listening and 100 for reading, with a 60% bar on the total.
Is HSK 1 worth taking?
As a certificate, rarely; almost nobody asks for HSK 1. As a deadline, frequently. Paying for a date six weeks out converts a vague intention into a plan, and the exam room teaches you what test conditions feel like before a level where it matters.
