How to pass HSK 6
HSK 6 is a speed exam wearing a vocabulary exam's clothes. The list is 5,000 words, but the thing that decides the score is whether you can read 50 questions of long-form Chinese in about 50 minutes and then retell a story you were allowed to read once. One hundred and one questions, about 140 minutes, 180 of 300 to pass.

Which format are you sitting? Under the revised standard taking effect from July 2026, level 6 asks for roughly 5,400 words rather than 5,000, the paper drops to about 82 questions with two writing tasks rather than one retelling, and a spoken component is compulsory alongside it. The error-spotting questions
The reading section opens with items that give you four sentences and ask which one is wrong. They are the most trainable questions on the paper, because the errors come from a small set: a misplaced adverb, a missing measure word, a subject that does not match its verb, a redundant 的, a complement in the wrong position, a connector whose second half never arrives.
Work through them by category rather than one by one. A learner who can name the six error types answers these in seconds and buys minutes for the long articles, which is where the section is won.
The retelling task
Ten minutes to read, no notes, then 400 characters in 35 minutes. Three rules cover most of the mark:
- Fix the skeleton while you read. Who, where, what changed, how it ended. Names in particular — losing a character's name costs you the ability to write about them for 400 characters.
- Write the story, not your opinion. The task is a retelling. Commentary, morals, and invented details all lose points against a rubric that wants the events back.
- Use sentences you control. Four hundred characters of clean HSK 4 grammar scores higher than 400 characters of ambitious HSK 6 grammar with errors in it.

The six-level ladder ends here, and the language does not. The 2021 standard adds bands 7 to 9 above this point, reaching past 11,000 words, with a combined exam that tests speaking and writing properly — see the nine-band standard. How many words do you need for HSK 6?
5,000 cumulative, about 2,500 of them new above HSK 5. The official list is a floor rather than a ceiling: reading passages are drawn from real writing, so words outside the list appear and you are expected to survive them.

It certifies comfortable comprehension of long texts and lectures and fluent written and spoken expression, at roughly 5,000 words. Educated native speakers know several times more, and the exam tests no spontaneous speech at all. Treat it as the end of the guided ladder rather than the end of the language.
How do you pass the HSK 6 reading section?
By reading fast enough. Fifty questions in about 50 minutes, several of them under long articles, means you cannot read every word. Learn to find the answer in the passage rather than to understand the passage completely — and build the underlying speed with daily volume months earlier.
