How to pass HSK 5
HSK 5 is where written Chinese separates from the Chinese you speak. About 1,300 new words arrive, many of them belonging to newspapers and essays rather than conversation, four-character idioms start appearing in reading passages, and the writing section asks for two short compositions graded by a person. One hundred questions, about 125 minutes, 180 of 300 to pass.

Which format are you sitting? Under the revised standard taking effect from July 2026, level 5 asks for roughly 3,600 words rather than 2,500, the paper drops to about 72 questions with writing narrowing to two extended tasks, and a spoken component is compulsory alongside it. What actually changes from HSK 4
- Register. HSK 5 vocabulary includes words nobody says out loud: 从而, 导致, 显著, 从事. They are the connective tissue of written argument, and the reading section is written argument.
- 成语. Four-character idioms appear inside passages, usually where the argument turns. You do not need hundreds; you need the common ones cold, because one unknown idiom in a topic sentence can cost three questions.
- Passage length. Articles replace paragraphs. The skill being tested is finding the answer inside a text you cannot fully process, which is a technique as much as a vocabulary level.
- Human grading. Two compositions of about 80 characters, marked on whether they did the task, whether the sentences are correct, and whether the characters are legible. Ambition is not rewarded; control is.

The three things that decide it
- Volume of reading, in the register the exam uses. Novels do not prepare you for HSK 5; news and short essays do. Read the kind of text the paper is made of.
- Review discipline on 4,000 items. At this scale, review is the course. Anything not scheduled decays, and decay at HSK 5 costs listening comprehension first, which is invisible until the exam.
- Composition to a template. Have a shape ready for both writing tasks — an opening sentence, three middle sentences, a closing sentence — so the eighty characters go on the page instead of into planning.

How long does HSK 5 take?
About eight to fourteen months after HSK 4 at an hour a day. The vocabulary alone is over a year of new words at a comfortable pace, and the reading is long enough that comprehension has to become effortless rather than possible.

What can you do with HSK 5?
Read newspapers and magazines with effort, follow films with subtitles, give a structured presentation, and work in a Chinese-language environment with support. Many humanities and business degree programs taught in Chinese ask for HSK 5.
