What HSK level do you need for MBBS in China?

For an English-taught medical degree in China, HSK 4 is the level to plan around. Entry rests on an English test, HSK 4 is preferred or required by the schools we checked, and the national graduation rule for foreign-language-taught undergraduates is also HSK 4.
| Requirement | HSK level | Source (checked 14 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Six-year English-taught MBBS, 2024 intake (Tongji University) | HSK 4 gives admission priority; not stated as a minimum | Tongji University School of Medicine, 2024 plan |
| Same program, English test | IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 85, with exemptions for native speakers | Tongji University School of Medicine, 2024 plan |
| English-taught master in clinical medicine (Wuhan University) | HSK 4 or above; HSK 3 means one year of Chinese first | Wuhan University admissions, 11 Nov 2024 |
| Graduation, foreign-language-taught undergraduate | HSK 4 | Southwest University, quoting Ministry of Education Jiao Wai [2018] No. 50, 1 Mar 2021 |

Why a medical degree in English still needs Chinese
Hospital placements happen in Chinese, with patients who speak it. That is why the schools above ask for HSK 4 even where the lectures are in English. Treat HSK 4 as the target before your clinical years, not as something to sort out in the last semester.
It varies by school
Tongji treats HSK 4 as a priority factor, Wuhan University treats it as a requirement for its English-taught clinical medicine master's, and the national rule sets the level at graduation. Many agent websites state a hard HSK 4 rule and a deadline for it. We did not find that in an official text, so confirm the timing with the school's international office, and apply only to programs on the Ministry of Education's list.
If you will study in Chinese
A Chinese-taught medical program follows the graduation rule for Chinese-taught degrees, HSK 5, and its entry levels are the ones on the degree page. Medical Chinese is also its own vocabulary, which HSK does not teach.
What those levels mean in words
Under the current standard the levels are cumulative: HSK 3 is about 600 words, HSK 4 about 1,200, HSK 5 about 2,500 and HSK 6 about 5,000. Going from HSK 3 to HSK 4 means roughly 600 more words, and from HSK 4 to HSK 5 roughly 1,300 more. A revised HSK 3.0 standard is first sat on 13 December 2026, see the exam date page. Check with the school which version of the certificate it accepts. The full ladder is on HSK levels, a schedule for reaching one is on the study plan, and the free placement test shows where you stand today.
