How to build an HSK study plan

Every HSK level is passed the same way: pick a date you can defend, work at a pace whose review load you can carry, and spend the last month measuring rather than learning. What changes between levels is the size, not the shape. This is the shape.
Pick the date backwards
Count the new words the level requires, divide by a weekly pace you will still be keeping in month three, add four weeks for past papers and repair, then look at the exam calendar. If the arithmetic says twenty weeks and the next date is in twelve, register for the following date or the level below. The exam does not award partial credit for ambition.
| Level | New words | At 50 words a week | With repair weeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | 150 | 3 weeks | ~8 weeks from zero, foundations included |
| HSK 2 | ~150 | 3 weeks | ~10 weeks |
| HSK 3 | ~300 | 6 weeks | ~14 weeks |
| HSK 4 | ~600 | 12 weeks | ~20 weeks |
| HSK 5 | ~1,300 | 26 weeks | ~30 weeks |
| HSK 6 | ~2,500 | 50 weeks | ~56 weeks |
These are vocabulary-driven estimates at a steady pace, and they assume the level below is already solid. The per-level guides give the fuller version: HSK 1, HSK 2, HSK 3, HSK 4, HSK 5, HSK 6.
What a daily session contains
Forty-five minutes, in this order, every day:
- Review first, 15 minutes. Everything due today, from every level you have ever studied. Doing this first means it happens; doing it last means it does not.
- New material, 15 minutes. Seven to ten new words met inside sentences, or one grammar pattern with its examples.
- Reading, 10 minutes. A graded passage slightly below your ceiling. This is what converts recognition into speed, and it is the step people cut when they are busy.
- Listening, 5 minutes. At natural speed, played once. Short and daily beats long and occasional, because listening improves on a slower clock than anything else.
Speaking is not in that list because it belongs on its own schedule with a person, not in a solo study block. Two conversations a week does more for your spoken Chinese than any amount of solo drilling — the comment and question method is how to have them before you feel ready.
Retention is the plan
The mistake that ends most HSK 4 and HSK 5 attempts is a plan that schedules learning and not forgetting. Every word you meet decays on a curve, and at 1,200 items the daily decay is larger than a day's new material. A plan without scheduled review is therefore a plan to arrive at the exam with the last month's vocabulary and none of the earlier months'.
In GraphChinese: reviews are scheduled by an FSRS model that predicts when each item is about to be forgotten, so the review load stays flat while the collection grows, and nothing you have proven quietly rots while you climb. The learning science behind it.
The last four weeks
- Week 4 out: one full past paper under exam conditions, including the listening timing. Score it honestly.
- Weeks 3 and 2: repair only what the paper exposed. Every wrong answer names a specific word, pattern or skill; fix that, not the syllabus.
- Week 1: a second full paper, then review and sleep. Nothing learned in the final week survives to the exam anyway, and being rested moves listening scores more than cramming does.
If you are already partway up
Most people are not starting a level from a clean line. The useful first move is a diagnosis rather than a plan: find the specific topics under your target level that are not solid, and start there. A practice paper gives you a score; a topic-level placement gives you the list. HSK scoring explains why the score hides what you need.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours a day should you study for the HSK?
Forty-five to sixty minutes daily beats three hours twice a week, because memory consolidates between sessions rather than inside them. Below about twenty minutes a day the review load stops fitting and progress stalls at any level.
How many new words a week is realistic?
Forty to seventy, if every one of them is reviewed on a schedule afterwards. Learners fail at 200 a week not because they cannot meet 200 words but because 200 words a week generates a review load they abandon in month two.
When should you start past papers?
Four to six weeks before the exam, and not earlier. Past papers measure; they do not teach. Their job is to tell you which specific things to repair while there is still time to repair them.
Should you study vocabulary or grammar first?
Neither in isolation. Meet vocabulary inside sentences that use the grammar you are learning, so each reinforces the other. A word list learned alone produces recognition without production, and a grammar point learned alone has nothing to operate on.
What is the single most common planning mistake?
Planning acquisition and ignoring retention. A plan that schedules new material every week and never schedules review of old material collapses somewhere around HSK 4, when what you are forgetting each week exceeds what you are learning.
Skip the guesswork about where you stand. The free adaptive placement tests you down to the topic in about ten minutes, then builds the queue for you and keeps the review load flat. The whole course, HSK 0 through HSK 6, is $49 once for lifetime access.
