What HSK level do you need to work in China?

HSK 3 carries daily life. HSK 4 carries an office. HSK 5 is where meetings start going your way. The exam measures how much you can read and hear, which is most of what a job needs and not all of it — the part it never tests is whether you can say the thing under time pressure with someone waiting.

What each level buys you

LevelWordsWhat it gets you at work
HSK 3600Daily life without a phone in your hand: shopping, directions, food, rent, a doctor. Small talk with colleagues.
HSK 41,200An office in the background. Status updates, WeChat threads, lunch, a meeting you are following rather than steering.
HSK 52,500Meetings you steer. Formal register, hedging, a proposal argued out loud. The common bar on Chinese-speaking job listings.
HSK 65,000Contracts, reports, industry press, a room where nobody slows down for you.

Daily life: HSK 3

Six hundred words is the point where errands stop being projects. You can order without pointing, ask for the size you want, explain what hurts, argue about a deposit, and follow the answer. At HSK 1 and 2 you can get fed. At HSK 3 you can get settled.

The thing that decides whether HSK 3 feels like enough is listening speed rather than vocabulary. A shopkeeper answering at full speed uses words you know in a shape you have never heard. That is a practice problem, and it is why graded reading with audio matters more at this level than another hundred words.

An office: HSK 4

HSK 4 is the level most people mean by "working Chinese". You can read the group chat, write a short update, sit through a meeting and catch the decisions. What you cannot yet do is change the direction of that meeting, because persuasion happens in the register HSK 5 teaches.

HSK 4 is also the common admission bar for a Chinese-taught degree, which is why so many people stop there. If your Chinese is for work rather than for a university application, treat HSK 4 as the middle of the road rather than the end of it.

Business conversations: HSK 5

HSK 5 is where the language turns from following to leading, and the register does more of that work than the 2,500-word list. HSK 5 material is written-style Chinese — 因此, 从而, 就…而言, the four-character phrases that carry a whole argument, and the hedges that let you disagree without ending the conversation. That is what a negotiation runs on.

The grammar load at this level is connectives and adverb order. A learner with 3,000 words and no 虽然…但是 still sounds like a beginner, because the sentence never gets long enough to hold two ideas. The HSK 5 grammar points are the ones that do that work.

If your Chinese is specifically for a workplace, the BCT (商务汉语考试) is the exam built for it — email, meetings, negotiation, reports — and it tells an employer something an HSK certificate at the same difficulty does not.

Contracts and reports: HSK 6

Five thousand words, long texts, and a room that does not slow down. HSK 6 is the level at which a legal document, an internal report or an industry publication becomes readable without a dictionary open beside it. Very few jobs require it, and the ones that do are usually translation, law, journalism or research.

Teaching Chinese

Teaching Chinese as a foreign language is gated by a teaching certificate rather than by an HSK level on its own. For a non-native speaker the usual route is the CTCSOL (国际中文教师证书), which sets a Chinese-language entry requirement of its own — commonly an HSK 5 pass alongside HSKK intermediate.

Read the current handbook, not this page, before you plan around a number. CLEC sets the CTCSOL requirement and it has moved before. The same caution applies to work permits: the Z visa is scored on your degree, your experience and your record, Chinese ability adds points in some provinces, and the scoring is provincial.

Teaching English in China has no HSK requirement at all. That route asks for a degree, a TEFL certificate and a clean record check, and plenty of teachers work for years at HSK 2.

Where the exam stops measuring

Every level here is a reading and listening measure. HSK 1 to 6 test comprehension and writing; the speaking exam is separate and optional (that is the HSKK). So a certificate answers "can they follow this?" and leaves "can they say it?" open, and the second question is the one an interview asks.

The practical fix is to train production alongside the ladder rather than after it: say the sentence out loud, get it wrong, get corrected, repeat. The comment and question method is the version of that which works without a tutor in the room.

Frequently asked questions

What HSK level do you need for daily life in China?

HSK 3, about 600 words. That covers shopping, directions, ordering, renting, seeing a doctor and the small talk around all of it. Below HSK 3 you can survive with a phone; at HSK 3 you stop needing one for ordinary errands. HSK 4 is where daily life stops being work.

Which HSK level is needed for business conversations?

HSK 5, about 2,500 words, is where a meeting starts going your way. HSK 4 gets you through a status update and a lunch. What HSK 5 adds is the register — the formal connectives, the hedging, and the written-style vocabulary that appears the moment a conversation turns into a proposal.

Do employers in China ask for an HSK certificate?

Chinese-speaking roles commonly ask for HSK 5, and some ask for HSK 4. Roles at foreign companies operating in English usually ask for nothing. The certificate is a filter at the application stage; what decides the job is the interview, which is conducted in whichever language the work happens in.

Is there a business Chinese exam?

Yes — the BCT (商务汉语考试), run by the same body as the HSK. It tests workplace Chinese specifically: email, meetings, negotiation, reports. If your Chinese is for work rather than for study, a BCT result says more to an employer than an HSK result at the same nominal difficulty.

What HSK level do you need to teach Chinese?

Teaching Chinese as a foreign language is gated by a teaching certificate, not by an HSK level on its own. For a non-native speaker the usual route is the CTCSOL (国际中文教师证书), which sets its own Chinese-language entry requirement — commonly an HSK 5 pass with HSKK intermediate. That requirement is set by CLEC and it does change, so read the current CTCSOL handbook before you plan around a number.

Do you need HSK for a Chinese work visa?

No. The Z visa and the work permit behind it are scored on your degree, your relevant experience, your age and your criminal record check. Chinese-language ability adds points under the work-permit scoring system in some provinces, and the rules are provincial — confirm with the bureau handling your permit rather than with any guide, this one included.

Aim at the topics your job actually needs. The free adaptive placement test names which ones are missing, and the course teaches them in the order they unlock each other. The whole course, HSK 0 through HSK 6, is $49 once for lifetime access.
