HSK passing scores, and how the exam is graded

A small brass balance scale with two shallow pans.

The HSK pass mark is 60% of the paper at every level: 120 of 200 at HSK 1 and HSK 2, and 180 of 300 from HSK 3 up. The number is simple. What surprises people is everything around it — that the pass applies to the total and not to each section, that the certificate never expires but institutions still treat it as two years old, and that a 181 and a 280 look the same on a transcript and very different in a classroom.

The pass mark at every level

HSK 5Listening 100, Reading 100, Writing 10030018060%
HSK 6Listening 100, Reading 100, Writing 10030018060%

Each section is reported out of 100 regardless of how many questions it holds, so a single listening item at HSK 1 is worth five points and a single reading item at HSK 6 is worth two. The score report prints the three section scores and the total, and nothing else — no percentile, no grade, no breakdown by question type.

One weak section does not fail you

The pass is a total, so 100 in reading and 80 in listening passes HSK 3 exactly as well as 90 and 90. That has a practical consequence worth planning around: if your listening is far behind your reading, which is the normal shape for a self-taught learner, you can still pass by pushing reading and writing high. It is also a trap, because listening is the skill that gates every conversation you will ever have, and the exam lets you leave it behind.

Watch the requirement, not the exam. Universities and employers frequently add conditions the HSK itself does not impose — a minimum in each section, a minimum well above 180, or an HSKK speaking level alongside the HSK. Read the published requirement for your program before you decide what score to aim for.

How the writing section is marked

At HSK 3 and HSK 4 the writing items have right answers: the scrambled sentence goes in one order, and the gap takes one character. They are marked objectively.

At HSK 5 and HSK 6 a human grades the composition. Three things move that mark more than elegance: the piece answers the task it was given, the characters are legible and correct, and the sentence patterns are ones you control. The HSK 6 task in particular is a retelling — the grader wants the events, the names, and the order back, not your opinion of the story. Learners who write a beautiful essay about the passage lose points on a task they understood perfectly.

Results, validity, and retakes

What a passing score does not prove

A 180 at HSK 4 means you answered 60% of a paper correctly on one morning. It does not mean you have HSK 4 in the sense of being able to use it, because 40% of that paper was material you did not know — and the exam does not tell you which 40%. This is the gap that makes the level after a scraped pass feel impossible: HSK 5 assumes everything in HSK 4 is automatic, and for a 181 it is not.

In GraphChinese: a topic does not count as learned until you can produce it, and the next topic stays locked until its prerequisites are proven — so the number the system reports is a claim about what you can do, not a score from one morning. The free adaptive placement finds exactly which topics under your target level are shaky, which is the same 40% the exam refuses to itemize. How the mastery model works.

Frequently asked questions

What score do you need to pass the HSK?

120 out of 200 at HSK 1 and HSK 2, and 180 out of 300 at HSK 3, 4, 5 and 6. That is 60% of the total at every level.

Can you fail one section and still pass the HSK?

Yes. The pass mark applies to the total, not to each section, so a strong reading score can carry a weak listening score. Some universities set their own minimum per section, so check the requirement you are actually being measured against.

How long is an HSK score valid?

Score reports are treated as valid for two years from the test date for admission and employment purposes. The certificate itself does not expire, but an institution can refuse a result older than two years, and most do.

When do HSK results come out?

Commonly about two weeks after a computer-based test and about a month after a paper test. Your admission ticket carries the exact publication date, and you check the score online with your admission ticket number and your name.

What happens if you fail the HSK?

Nothing except the fee. There is no waiting period and no limit on retakes, so you can register for the next available date. A failed result is not reported to anyone; you decide which score report to send.

Is there a distinction or grade above passing?

No. The HSK reports a number, not a grade band. What people call a strong pass is simply a high total — many universities that ask for HSK 4 in practice want a comfortable margin above 180 rather than 181.

Find the 40% you would have missed. The free adaptive placement tests you down to the topic and reports what is actually shaky under your target level, then teaches those topics in dependency order. The whole course, HSK 0 through HSK 6, is $49 once for lifetime access.
