The Review Nobody Wrote
New in this passage
Recently I want to buy a new phone. I looked at a website, and under that phone there are five hundred reviews, all saying it's great, written in a lot of detail too. I think it should be fine, right?
Do you know, I saw in the news yesterday that a lot of website reviews actually aren't written by customers themselves, they're generated by artificial intelligence. Do you really think those five hundred were written by customers?
What? Reviews can be generated too? So can none of the things we normally look at be trusted anymore?
I looked into it, and it's really true. Some companies specifically use artificial intelligence to generate glowing reviews, making the product look popular, when actually not a single customer has genuinely used it.
But if that product really works well and the quality is good, does it really matter that the reviews were generated? The result is the same either way, isn't it? I wasn't tricked either. What I bought is still a good product.
That's exactly where I disagree. Even if the product really is good, the company deliberately made you believe these are the words of five hundred customers who wrote them themselves. That itself is lying to people, and it should be banned.
I understand what you mean, but who fully trusts online reviews these days anyway? When I buy things myself, I usually don't decide based on reviews alone. I try it myself, or ask friends what they think. Reviews were never the final judgment.
You can do that because you have the time and the habit of doing it. But not everyone tries things themselves before buying. A lot of people trust reviews precisely because they don't have time to look into it. When reviews get faked, the people who end up affected are exactly the ones with no time.
That's actually true, I hadn't thought of that. But if the website said clearly that some of these reviews are AI-generated summaries, not all written by real people, would you still think that's lying?
In that case I wouldn't think it's lying, because you'd know what you were looking at yourself. The problem is they never told customers that. They let customers believe every single review was written by a real customer. That's the part that makes me angriest.
So our views are actually pretty close. It's just that you care more about whether it's lying, and I care more about whether the product actually works well. This phone, I still plan to buy it.
Buying it is fine. But I hope that next time you judge for yourself, you'll also think about how many of those five hundred reviews are actually real.
