例 · WORKED EXAMPLES
— Nǐ jiào shénme? — Wǒ jiào Mǎlì.——你叫什么? ——我叫玛丽。— What's your name? — I'm Mary.叫 (jiào) works for first names, nicknames, whatever you go by — the everyday version.
— Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi? — Wǒ jiào Dàwèi, hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ!——你叫什么名字? ——我叫大卫,很高兴认识你!— What's your name? — I'm David, nice to meet you!Chain three chunks into one turn: answer, then the politeness that closes an introduction.
— Wǒ xìng Wáng. — Hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ.——我姓王。 ——很高兴认识你。— My surname is Wang. — Nice to meet you.姓 (xìng) is more formal — surname only, often used meeting someone older or in business.
