全诗 · THE WHOLE POEM
Bái rì yī shān jìn,白日依山尽，The white sun sets against the mountains;
Huáng Hé rù hǎi liú.黄河入海流。the Yellow River runs into the sea.
Yù qióng qiān lǐ mù,欲穷千里目，To exhaust a thousand miles of sight,
gèng shàng yì céng lóu.更上一层楼。climb one storey higher.
更上一层楼 left the poem long ago: it is now what you say to someone who has done well and could go further. Note the sandhi — 一 before the second-tone 层 is said yì.
