Advanced Particles: Structural 所 and Modal 罢了/啦/嘛

Chinese grammar · HSK 6 · 高级助词 · By Carson 木林森

所 + V turns a verb into a noun-modifier, almost always followed by 的 + noun: 我所说的话 = 'the words that I said'. Fixed forms: 所谓 (the so-called), 有所 + 2-syllable verb (a mild change: 有所提高 = improved somewhat).

suǒ actually 罢了 bà le a modal particle indicating (that's all, on… (onom.) sound of singing, cheering etc used in 吽

为…所… is a formal literary passive: 为 + agent + 所 + verb = 'is [verb]-ed by [agent]' (more formal than 被).

罢了 (sentence-final): 'that's all, nothing more' — downplays, usually with 只是/不过. = fusion of 了+啊, adds exclamatory/relief tone. asserts something as obvious or softens advice/persuasion.

Worked examples

ChinesePinyinEnglishWhat it shows
这就是我所说的问题。 Zhè jiù shì wǒ suǒ shuō de wèn tí. This is exactly the problem I was talking about. Minimal 所+V frame: 所说 modifies 问题 via 的, nominalizing the verb 说
他的看法有所改变。 Tā de kàn fǎ yǒu suǒ gǎi biàn. His view has changed somewhat. 有所 + 2-syllable verb (改变) signals a mild, unspecified degree of change
这种行为一直为大家所批评。 Zhè zhǒng xíng wéi yī zhí wéi dà jiā suǒ pī píng. This kind of behavior has always been criticized by everyone. 为…所… formal passive: 为大家 marks the agent, 所批评 marks the verb — more literary than 被大家批评
我只是开个玩笑罢了,你别生气。 Wǒ zhǐ shì kāi gè wán xiào bà le, nǐ bié shēng qì. I was just joking, that's all — don't be angry. 罢了 downplays the preceding clause (paired with 只是), softening the statement
