Emphatic Constructions: 非…不可
Structure: (Subject) + 非 + Verb Phrase + 不可. Literally "if not X, unacceptable" → "absolutely must X / nothing else will do."
非 here is a bound morpheme, NOT the adverb 非常 (very) — it only functions as half of the fixed frame with 不可 at the end. The verb phrase in the middle can be short (非去不可) or contain its own object and modifiers (非把这件事查清楚不可).
Register: emphatic and willful — stronger than 一定要 (neutral necessity) or 必须 (external obligation). Common in both formal writing and heated speech.
Common mistake: dropping 不可 (❌ 他非去 — incomplete) or pairing 非 with words like 一定/必须 that don't take a trailing 不可.
