Multi-Layer Compound Sentences
A multi-layer compound sentence (多重复句) stacks two or more logical relations in one sentence, with a compound clause nested inside half of another. 虽然他很忙，但是只要有时间，他就会来 has an outer concession and an inner condition.

A multi-layer compound sentence has two or more logical relations stacked in one sentence, with one connective pair nested inside a clause of another. To read one, first find the outermost pair, which usually spans the widest scope, and then look inside one of its halves for an inner pair. For example, in 虽然他很忙，但是只要有时间，他就会来, the outer layer is 虽然…但是… (concession) and the inner layer, nested in the second half, is 只要…就… (condition).
Common combinations are concession with condition, cause with choice, and progression with concession.
How to read one: First locate the OUTERMOST connective pair (it usually spans the widest scope, often at the very start and after the first comma-break). Everything inside one of its two halves may then contain its OWN inner connective pair — a second (or third) layer.
Example: 虽然他很忙，但是只要有时间，他就会来看我们。
- Layer 1 (outer): 虽然…但是… (concession) — spans the whole sentence.
- Layer 2 (inner): 只要…就… (condition) — nested entirely inside the 但是-clause.
Common combos: concession+condition, cause+alternative, progression+concession. Producing natural multi-layer sentences (not run-ons) is a hallmark of advanced written Chinese.

Concedes a fact, then turns against it; often the outer layer of a sentence.

How do I read a sentence with two pairs of connectives?
Find the outermost pair first. It spans the whole sentence. Then look inside one half for the second pair. In 如果明天不下雨，我们要么去爬山，要么去骑车, 如果 sets the outer condition and 要么…要么… is the inner choice.
What is the difference between 只要…就… and 只有…才…?
只要…就… gives a sufficient condition: 只要努力就能成功 means effort is enough. 只有…才… gives the only condition: 只有努力才能成功 means without effort you cannot succeed.
