Numeral + Adjective + Classifier Phrases

Chinese grammar · HSK 6 · 数词+形容词+量词短语 · By Carson 木林森 ·

A numeral + adjective + classifier phrase puts a single-syllable adjective such as 大, 小, 整 or 满 between the number and the classifier. The adjective stresses size or completeness, as in 一大碗饭 and 一整天.

数词 shù cí 形容词 xíng róng cí 量词短语 liàng cí duǎn yǔ

In English

In this pattern a short adjective sits between the number and the measure word: Numeral + adjective + measure word + noun. The adjective colours how the speaker sees the amount. 一大堆书 means a big pile of books, whereas 一堆大书 would mean a pile of large books, which is a different meaning.

小 marks a small amount (一小口), 整 marks a whole (一整天). The order is fixed. If you swap the adjective and measure word, the phrase either breaks or means something else.

✅ 一大堆书 (a big pile of books) — 大 describes the pile's size.
❌ 一堆大书 — this instead means 'a pile of physically large books' (大 modifies 书, wrong meaning).

Common fixed combos: 一大批 (a large batch), 一小部分 (a small portion), 一整天 (a whole day), 一大早 (very early in the morning). Word order is fixed — reordering breaks grammaticality or changes the meaning entirely.

Worked examples

ChinesePinyinEnglishWhat it shows
他买了一大堆书。 Tā mǎi le yí dà duī shū. He bought a huge pile of books. Minimal frame: 一(Num) + 大(Adj) + 堆(Classifier) + 书(Noun) — 大 describes the pile, not the books
这是四大发明之一。 Zhè shì sì dà fā míng zhī yī. This is one of the Four Great Inventions. The numeral changes from 一 to 四 — the Adj+Classifier slot (大发明) works with any numeral
会议只讨论了一小部分内容,大部分留到下次。 Huì yì zhǐ tǎo lùn le yì xiǎo bù fen nèi róng, dà bù fen liú dào xià cì. The meeting only discussed a small portion of the content; most was left for next time. 一小部分 embedded in a full sentence, contrasted explicitly with 大部分 (most)
他一大早就出门锻炼身体了。 Tā yí dà zǎo jiù chū mén duàn liàn shēn tǐ le. He went out to exercise very early in the morning. 一大早 is a fixed idiomatic time expression using this same Num+Adj+Clf pattern, used adverbially
