The intermediate Chinese plateau, measured: HSK 4 doubles your vocabulary

By Carson 木林森 · October 2026

The intermediate Chinese plateau has a number. Under HSK 3.0, HSK 4 adds 991 new words, exactly as many as HSK 1, 2 and 3 combined (991). The older HSK 2.0 lists have the same shape: 598 new words at HSK 4 against 595 for levels 1 to 3. So the step after HSK 3 doubles your vocabulary, and a month of study that felt like a whole level at HSK 2 now covers a fraction of one.

Counts below are from the official HSK 3.0 syllabus (国际中文教育中文水平等级标准, 2025 revision) and the HSK 2.0 word list, computed when this page loads.

New material at each HSK level

"Growth" is the level's new words as a share of every word before it. Above 90% means the level nearly doubles what you know.

Three things peak in the same place. HSK 3 and HSK 4 each grow your vocabulary by 98% and 100%; from HSK 5 the growth falls to 80% and then 50%. HSK 4 brings 441 new characters, the most of any level from 1 to 6. And levels 3 and 4 carry 96 and 95 grammar points, more than any other level below 7.

Why it feels like being stuck

What gets you past it

  1. Measure where you are. The placement test or a practice HSK 4 test shows whether the gap is words, grammar, reading speed or listening.
  2. Plan in hours, not levels. The HSK study calculator turns your hours per week into a date, which keeps a long level from feeling endless.
  3. Learn in prerequisite order. A word is easier when its characters and the grammar around it are already known. The prerequisite graph shows how much of HSK 4 depends on earlier material.
  4. Keep reviewing the early levels. Spaced review costs minutes a day and stops the HSK 1 to 3 words leaking out while the new ones go in.
  5. Read and listen at your level every week. The HSK 4 grammar points make sense in context far faster than as a list.

Frequently asked questions

Why does HSK 4 feel so much harder than HSK 3?

Because it is bigger. Under HSK 3.0 (the 2025 syllabus), HSK 4 adds 991 new words, exactly as many as HSK 1, 2 and 3 together (991). Under HSK 2.0 it was 598 new words against 595 for levels 1 to 3. Either way, one level doubles what you know, so the same study time shows half the visible progress.

How many words do you need for HSK 4?

1,982 words in total under HSK 3.0 (levels 1 to 4), of which 991 are new at level 4. Under HSK 2.0 the total was 1,193. The full list is on the HSK 4 vocabulary page.

Is the intermediate plateau in Chinese real?

The size of the jump is. HSK 3 and HSK 4 each roughly double the vocabulary that came before them, HSK 4 has the most new characters of levels 1 to 6, and levels 3 and 4 carry the most grammar points. Whether you feel stuck depends on how you study, but the amount of new material is measurable and it peaks here.

What should I study after HSK 3?

Find your real level first (the free placement test takes about ten minutes), then work through the HSK 4 words and grammar in an order where each item builds on ones you already know, with spaced review so the HSK 1 to 3 words do not fade while you add 991 more.
