Advanced Conjunctions: 而, 同, 与, 不料, 可, 若
而 (ér) links two predicates (usually adjectives or verb phrases) about the same subject. It can show simple addition (both positive/negative) or contrast (positive→negative). 表面上…而实际上… is a classic contrast frame.
同 / 与 (tóng / yǔ) are formal written equivalents of 和/跟, joining two nouns: A 同/与 B. Used in reports, essays, formal speech — not casual chat.
