Location with 在: Where Things Are
在 has two main uses as a location word:
1. 在 as main verb — states where something/someone is:
- Subject + 在 + Place
- 他在学校。(He is at school.)
- 书在桌子上。(The book is on the table.)
2. 在 + place before an action verb — where an action takes place:
- Subject + 在 + Place + Verb
- 他在学校上课。(He has class at school.)
- 我在家吃饭。(I eat at home.)
Questions: Subject + 在哪里/哪儿?
在 vs 有:
- 在 = tells WHERE something is (location of known item)
- 有 = tells WHAT EXISTS somewhere (existence)
- 书在桌子上。vs 桌子上有书。
