Progressive Action: 正在…(呢) — Right Now
正在 (zhèngzài) puts a verb in the progressive aspect and stresses that the action is happening right now. It is more precise than plain 在, and a final 呢 is optional.
Structure: Subject + 正在 + Verb (+ Object) + 呢
- 我正在吃饭呢。(I'm eating right now.)
- 她正在打电话。(She's on the phone right now — 呢 can be dropped.)
Question form: 你正在做什么(呢)？ — the natural way to ask what someone is doing right now.

Not: 我正在昨天看电影。 Progressive is for what is happening now; it cannot take a past time word.

呢 (ne)
Closes a sentence about an action in progress, with a lively tone.
Structure: (在) + verb + 呢

在 (zài)
Puts a verb into progressive without 正.

Is 正在 different from 在?
Almost the same. 正在 stresses 'right now', and 在 alone also works, as in 我在吃饭。 Both can end in 呢.
