Progressive Aspect: 在/正在 ... 呢

Chinese grammar · HSK 1 · 进行态 · By Carson 木林森 ·

The progressive aspect shows an action in progress. Put 在 or 正在 before the verb, optionally add 呢 at the end, and 他在看书 means 'he is reading'.

在 zài 正在 zhèng zài 呢 ne

Pattern: Subject + (正)在 + Verb (+ Object) (+ 呢)

正在 is more emphatic than 在 alone, stressing that the action is happening right now.

呢 at the end adds a soft confirmation or a rhetorical flavor.
- 你在做什么呢?(What are you doing?)

Contrast with 了: 了 marks completion; 在/正在 marks ongoing action.
- 我吃了。(I ate.) vs. 我在吃。(I am eating.)
