GraphChinese vs Pimsleur for learning Mandarin
Twelve months of Pimsleur All Access cost $131.99 on the yearly plan. Its Mandarin course is 150 audio-led lessons in five levels, and Pimsleur says itself that the course does not focus on writing. GraphChinese is $49 once for lifetime access and runs from HSK 0 to HSK 6 on 829 topics, with characters, stroke-order writing and graded readings, each topic mapped to an HSK level.
Which should you choose?
- Choose GraphChinese if you want to read and write Chinese as well as speak it, on a route with a stated finish: 829 topics from the four tones to HSK 6, each mapped to an HSK level and served after what it rests on, with stroke-order writing, reviews that bring back what you are losing, and 102 narrated graded readings.
- Choose Pimsleur if you learn best by ear, you have a commute or a walk to fill with 30 minutes of spoken Mandarin, and you care about holding a conversation more than about reading characters or passing an exam.
- Switching is not worth it if Pimsleur has you speaking every day, you mostly need Mandarin for talking to people, and characters and the HSK are not on your list. An audio habit that works is worth more than a course you will not open.
Pimsleur is an audio-first conversation course: each Mandarin lesson is about 30 minutes and led by audio, aimed at spoken Mandarin learned by ear. Around the audio sit flash cards, short games and reading lessons.
GraphChinese is a course from HSK 0 to HSK 6 that teaches speaking, reading and writing together, orders everything by what depends on what, and maps every topic to an HSK level.

What Pimsleur does well
- It fits time you already have. Lessons are 30 minutes, audio-led (source, checked Oct 2026), so a commute becomes a lesson.
- The course has a clear shape. Mandarin: 150 lessons in five levels of 30 (source, checked Oct 2026).
- It works without a connection. 'No Internet needed with offline mode.' (source, checked Oct 2026).
- There is more than audio. Digital Flash Cards, Quick Match games and Speak Easy challenges (source, checked Oct 2026).
- You can try it before paying. 'Try 7 Days Free' (source, checked Oct 2026).
Where Pimsleur does not help
- Characters are not the focus. Includes 'Reading Lessons'; Pimsleur's own page says the course does not focus on writing (source, checked Oct 2026). If reading characters or an HSK paper is your goal, plan for something beside it.
- No HSK map on the pages we checked. The Pimsleur pages in our sheet state levels and lesson counts but no HSK level for them. If you are studying for an exam, that is the first thing to know.
- A subscription renews every year you study. All Access Annual: $131.99 (US App Store; a $164.99 variant is also listed) (source, checked Oct 2026). A lifetime purchase also exists, with no price on the pages we checked. The table above puts two years of each side by side.
Listening first versus a graph
Pimsleur is right that the ear matters: tones are learned by hearing them, and a course led by audio trains that in a way reading alone does not. What audio alone does not give you is the written language, and Mandarin is hard to grow past the basics without it.
A knowledge graph makes the order explicit: every one of the 829 topics lists what it rests on, the course serves it after those, and reviews bring back the topics that are fading before they get in the way of what is ahead.
The result is one route from the four tones through HSK 6 grammar, at a pace set per learner. You can jump ahead or claim a topic you already know, and reviews then check the claim. One caveat: most HSK 6 vocabulary topics are alphabetical slices of the word list rather than a dependency order.
If you are switching from Pimsleur
- Take the free placement test and start at your level.
- Keep your Pimsleur audio for the commute if you own it. Listening practice sits well beside a course that teaches the characters.
- Expect to know more words by ear than by sight. Claim the topics you can already say, and reviews will check what you can read.
- Bring Anki decks if you have them: GraphChinese imports
.apkgfiles with their audio and images. Review history does not come across, so those cards start fresh.
Frequently asked questions
Is Pimsleur or GraphChinese better for learning Mandarin?
They aim at different things. Pimsleur is an audio-first conversation course. Mandarin: 150 lessons in five levels of 30 (source, checked Oct 2026), and its own page says the course does not focus on writing. GraphChinese is a course from HSK 0 to HSK 6 built on a dependency graph of 829 topics, with characters, stroke-order writing, 102 narrated readings, course reviews on a mastery-review schedule and FSRS for flashcard decks. If you only want to speak, Pimsleur is a fair fit; if you want to read and write or sit the HSK, the course with characters and a stated finish is the better one.
