GraphChinese vs Dong Chinese for learning Chinese
Dong Chinese is a strong context-and-characters app; GraphChinese is a course with a defined finish line. Dong Chinese teaches words inside real sentences, explains where the 1000 most frequent characters come from, and has you write them by hand. Its home and pricing pages do not mention HSK or say where its course ends.
GraphChinese starts at zero, orders all {TOPICS} topics by what depends on what, holds each one until its prerequisites are proven, and ends at HSK 6. One lifetime price, no subscription.

Dong Chinese is a subscription app built around context: instead of drilling a word alone, it picks example sentences from a pool of millions that match your level, and adds videos and songs you should be able to follow.
Around that sit character etymologies, handwriting practice and a full dictionary with stroke order and frequency data. For anyone who learns characters by understanding how they are built, that is a real strength.

What Dong Chinese does well
- Words are met in complete sentences rather than alone, chosen from a very large pool to match your level.
- Character etymologies for the 1000 most frequent characters explain why a character looks the way it does.
- Handwriting practice is built in, not sold separately.
- It runs on the web and on Android, through Google Play or a direct APK download.
- It finds videos and songs you can follow at your level, which is listening practice most course apps leave out.
- Its pricing page offers a usable free plan and invites people who cannot afford it to write in.
Where it does not help
- You cannot see the ceiling. Dong Chinese's home and pricing pages do not say which level its course reaches or how it maps to HSK. If you are studying for an exam, that is the first thing you need to know.
- Matching your level is not a mastery gate. Picking sentences you can follow keeps input comfortable. In GraphChinese a topic opens only when the topics underneath are proven, and reviews return the ones you are losing.
- Subscription pricing never ends. $79.99 a year is fair for what it does, and it is due every year for as long as you study.
Context versus a graph
Context is how words stick, and Dong Chinese is right about that. What context alone does not give you is order: a sentence at your level can still lean on a grammar point you never learned properly, and nothing notices.
A knowledge graph makes the dependency explicit: every one of the 829 topics lists what must be solid before it opens, and the scheduler brings back the ones that are decaying before they block what is ahead.
The result is the same destination at a different pace per learner. You spend time where the graph says you are weak and skip nothing that a later topic needs, from the four tones through HSK 6 grammar.
Which one should you use
Use GraphChinese if you want a course that tells you where it ends and gets you there. The first lesson assumes no Chinese at all, and the same course continues to HSK 6.
If character origins and listening to real songs and videos are what keep you going, Dong Chinese is a good companion. For an ordered route to HSK 6, the graph and the scheduler are the parts its pages do not describe.
Is Dong Chinese or GraphChinese better for learning Chinese?
Dong Chinese teaches words in real sentences, with etymologies of the 1000 most frequent characters, handwriting practice and levelled videos and songs; its home and pricing pages do not state a level ceiling or an HSK mapping. GraphChinese is a Chinese-only course from HSK 0 to HSK 6 built on a dependency graph of 829 topics with mastery gating, stroke-order writing, 102 narrated readings and an FSRS scheduler. If an ordered route to HSK 6 is the goal, the course with a defined finish is the better fit.
How much does Dong Chinese cost?
Its pricing page, checked October 2026, lists $9.99 a month, $25.99 every 3 months, $49.99 every 6 months and $79.99 a year, each with a 7 day free trial, plus a free plan limited to one lesson every 12 hours after the first week. No lifetime plan is listed. GraphChinese is $49 once for lifetime access.
Does Dong Chinese prepare you for the HSK?
Its home and pricing pages do not mention HSK or a level ceiling, so we cannot say. GraphChinese maps every topic to an HSK level and runs from HSK 0 to HSK 6.
Can a beginner start Chinese with GraphChinese instead?
Yes. The first lesson, the four tones and the first characters, assumes no prior Chinese, and the same course continues through HSK 6.
See the whole path instead of reading about it. Your first lesson, the four tones and tracing 你 and 好 in correct stroke order, is free on the landing page, no signup. The whole course, HSK 0 through HSK 6, is $49 once for lifetime access.
