GraphChinese vs Rosetta Stone for learning Chinese
Twelve months of Rosetta Stone cost $159 on its yearly plan, which covers all 25 of its languages. Its Mandarin course is 20 units, and Rosetta Stone says it has no fixed alignment between units and course levels; we found no HSK mapping. GraphChinese is $49 once for lifetime access and runs from HSK 0 to HSK 6 on 829 topics, each mapped to an HSK level.
Which should you choose?
- Choose GraphChinese if you want a Chinese-only route with a stated finish: 829 topics from the four tones to HSK 6, each mapped to an HSK level and served after what it rests on, with stroke-order writing, reviews that bring back what you are losing, and 102 narrated graded readings.
- Choose Rosetta Stone if you like learning by picture-based immersion, you want speech feedback and conversation practice in the app, or you want several languages on one plan.
- Switching is not worth it if Rosetta Stone already has you studying every day, you use it for more than one language, and you are not working toward an HSK exam date. A habit that works, with no deadline on it, is worth more than a better map.
Rosetta Stone is a general immersion course built on pictures, and one plan opens all 25 of its languages. Around the lessons sit a speech tool, conversation practice and flashcard sets.
GraphChinese is a course built only for Chinese, from HSK 0 to HSK 6, that orders everything by what depends on what, explains the grammar, and maps every topic to an HSK level.

- It gets you talking. TruAccent speech tool; Chat Missions for conversation practice (source, checked Oct 2026).
- Review material is included. 500+ flashcard sets included in subscription (source, checked Oct 2026).
- The course is laid out in a clear order. Chinese (Mandarin) has 20 units in 5 groups (Units 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, 13-16, 17-20) (source, checked Oct 2026).
- One plan covers many languages. Mandarin buy page: $159 billed yearly ($13.25/mo); access to all 25 languages (source, checked Oct 2026).
- It runs where you are. Web plus iOS and Android apps (source, checked Oct 2026).
Where Rosetta Stone does not help
- The finish line is not tied to the HSK. Rosetta Stone says it has no fixed unit-to-course-level alignment; no HSK mapping found (per educationblog.rosettastone.com, checked Oct 2026). If you are studying for an exam, that is the first thing to know.
- Characters get little detail. Learners start with pinyin before moving to characters; the page gives no detail on character teaching (source, checked Oct 2026). GraphChinese teaches radicals and stroke order from HSK 0.
- You pay for languages you may not use. The plans are priced for all 25 languages, and they renew every year you study. Mandarin buy page: $19.99/month billed monthly; access to all 25 languages (source, checked Oct 2026). The table above puts two years of each side by side.
Immersion versus a graph
Immersion has a real point: meaning worked out from pictures and context sticks, and it keeps you in the language. What immersion alone does not give you is order, and Chinese grammar and characters reward knowing what rests on what.
A knowledge graph makes that dependency explicit: every one of the 829 topics lists what it rests on, the course serves it after those, and reviews bring back the topics that are fading before they get in the way of what is ahead.
The result is one route from the four tones through HSK 6 grammar, at a pace set per learner. You can jump ahead or claim a topic you already know, and reviews then check the claim. One caveat: most HSK 6 vocabulary topics are alphabetical slices of the word list rather than a dependency order.
If you are switching from Rosetta Stone
- Take the free placement test and start at your level.
- Claim the topics you already know from Rosetta Stone, and reviews will check them, so you do not repeat the first units.
- GraphChinese explains each grammar point and what it rests on, then has you use it. The 195 points are also public in the grammar reference.
- Bring Anki decks if you have them: GraphChinese imports
.apkgfiles with their audio and images. Review history does not come across, so those cards start fresh.
Frequently asked questions
Is Rosetta Stone or GraphChinese better for learning Chinese?
Rosetta Stone teaches by picture-based immersion and has speech practice. Chinese (Mandarin) has 20 units in 5 groups (Units 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, 13-16, 17-20) (source, checked Oct 2026), and we found no HSK mapping. GraphChinese is a course from HSK 0 to HSK 6 built on a dependency graph of 829 topics, with stroke-order writing, 102 narrated readings, course reviews on a mastery-review schedule and FSRS for flashcard decks.
