GraphChinese vs ChinesePod for learning Chinese

The short answer

ChinesePod is a lesson library; GraphChinese is a course that tracks what you know. ChinesePod's teachers break down real conversations well. Its pages describe six levels from Newbie to Advanced and never mention HSK.

GraphChinese orders {TOPICS} topics by dependency, locks each until its prerequisites are proven, schedules reviews, and maps everything to HSK 0 through HSK 6. Its price is $49, paid once.

ChinesePod has been teaching Mandarin for over twenty years, by its own account, through podcast-style lessons where a teacher takes apart an authentic conversation in 15 to 30 minutes. It is organised into six levels, Newbie, Elementary, Lower Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced, and it has a separate 22-lesson tone course called Say It Right.

It is a respectable catalogue with real teaching behind it.

What ChinesePod does well

Where it does not help

A library versus a graph

A library is only as good as your choice of what to open. The risk is not bad lessons, it is a gap you did not know you had: a grammar point you skipped because the title looked easy, a set of characters you half remember. Nothing in a library notices.

GraphChinese notices. Every topic lists what must be solid before it opens, and reviews return the items you are losing before they block anything ahead. That is the part a lesson catalogue, however well taught, does not do.

Which one should you use

Use GraphChinese if you want a course that decides the order and shows you the finish. That includes absolute beginners: the first lesson assumes no Chinese and is free without an account.

ChinesePod works well alongside it if you enjoy hearing a teacher talk through a conversation. The two do not compete for the same job.

Is ChinesePod or GraphChinese better for learning Chinese?

ChinesePod is a library of teacher-led lessons in six levels from Newbie to Advanced, and its pages do not mention HSK. GraphChinese is a course from HSK 0 to HSK 6 on a dependency graph of 829 topics with mastery gating, stroke-order writing, 102 narrated readings and an FSRS scheduler. If you want a path that decides what to study next and tracks what you know, GraphChinese is the better fit.

How much does ChinesePod cost?

Its pricing page, checked October 2026, lists a free tier with ads and limited access, and Premium at $29 a month with a 14-day trial. No yearly price is shown. GraphChinese is $49 once for lifetime access.

Does ChinesePod cover the HSK?

Its pages describe six levels of its own and do not mention HSK. GraphChinese maps every topic to an HSK level from 0 to 6.

Can a beginner start with GraphChinese instead of ChinesePod?

Yes. The first lesson assumes no prior Chinese and the same course continues to HSK 6.

See the whole path instead of reading about it. Your first lesson, the four tones and tracing 你 and 好 in correct stroke order, is free on the landing page, no signup. The whole course, HSK 0 through HSK 6, is $49 once for lifetime access.
